Thanks to everyone who entered the AWHA Competition in 2006, and congratulations to both to the Winners and to those authors whose work received a Commendation. This year it was decided to award only a single winner in each category, with each judge selecting an additional piece for further commendation. The decision was a difficult one and was ultimately based upon the lower number of entries we received in 2006 compared to last year’s competition.

Deciding upon the two winners proved to be extremely difficult. Very little separated the top entries in Flash Fiction, but ultimately "Finding the Words" by Steven Cavanagh was chosen for both its craftsmanship and the lingering sense of macabre pity that it evokes in the reader. In the short story category, the judges felt that "Vara" by Charles Spiteri displayed great strength of narrative and characterisation, and gave a fresh resonance to some classic horror themes.
